Dangseong Fortress, retaining traces of the Three Kingdom amidst the currents of history

Dangseong Fortress, located in Sangan-ri, within the Hwaseong township of Seosin-myeon, is Korea's Historic Site No. 217. It was the site of fierce battles during the Three Kingdom era. Its name varied according to the kingdom possessing the region at different times. Called Danghangseong by Baekje, and Dangseong by Goguryeo, it was changed to Dangseong-gun by Silla.

Whichever force was in possession of Dangseong could engage in trade with China, bringing in elements of that ancient civilization which laid the groundwork for cultural advancement. When Silla secured Dangseong Fortress, it was able to develop from an inland to a maritime kingdom, extending its reach overseas. Through interchange with the Tang dynasty, Silla was also able to gain military advantage. After the three kingdoms were unified by Silla, Dangseong increased in scale, endowing the region with significant status in cultural exchange. It remained a critical stronghold in maritime defense during the Goryeo and Joseon eras.
