Jeong Si-yeong's Historic House photo
This big house is arranged in a long layout, stretching from north to south, at the propitious site surrounded by a low hill.
The record on the high gate says that the gate was built in the 24th year of King Gojong’s reign (1887), but the anchae (women’s quarters) and sarangchae (men’s quarters) are believed to have been built about 50 years before the gate.
The gate is not built at the center of the house but on the northern side, making the house look rather smaller even though it has more than 50 rooms. As soon as one walks in through the gate, one sees a courtyard in front of the sarangchae; to the left of the yard is long haengnangchae (servants’ quarters), and to the right is the sarangchae.
At the end of the courtyard across from the sarangchae is a middle gate leading to the anchae.
When one walks in through the gate, one sees the open square-shaped anchae with the open front.
Around the daecheong (main wooden floor) at the center are a kitchen, the anbang (main room of anchae), and a tea room on the left, with a kitchen, a room across from the anbang, and a wood-floored room on the right side.
What is unique about this house is that a small room behind the main room of the sarangchae is covertly connected to the daecheong of the anchae through a rear floor.
This layout is usually seen at the houses of high-ranking officials during the Joseon Dynasty.
The long haengnangchae blocks the view of the front side of the anchae and sarangchae; thus forming a separate courtyard for both quarters.
The daemunchae (gate quarters) is attached to the haengnangchae.
The backyard of this house is used for housework since it is equipped with a well and a terrace for soy sauce jars.
The persimmon and pine trees around the yard create beautiful scenery together with a hill at the back.
In general, this house was built in a “stacked open squares” layout, having the typical structure of the houses of the nobility.
