Jeong Su-yeong's Historic House, Hwaseong

Jeong Su-yeong's Historic House, Hwaseong photo

This thatched house was built in the late 1800s. The L-shaped anchae (women’s quarters), sarangchae (men’s quarters), and haengnangchae (servants’ quarters) form an open rectangular layout typical in the Gyeonggi-do region at that time. When one enters the courtyard, one sees the sarangchae on the left side of the gate and the haengnangchae, which was built vertically long, on the right side of the gate. The anchae consists of the daecheong (main wooden floor) and a room facing the sarangchae as well as a tea room, the anbang (main room of anchae), and a kitchen, arranged vertically downward to form an overall L-shaped layout. A window is installed on the left side of the back wall of the daecheong, with a closet on the right side to use it as a shrine for holding the memorial tablets of ancestors. This kind of structure was commonly used by commoners who did not have a separate shrine. The courtyard of the sarangchae has a shed on the left. Overall, this house has the formality and functionality of commoners and seems to have belonged to a rich farmer.
